スイスの研究所Higgsの発表によると
同国の大手スーパーでは、プラスチックのレジ袋を有料にすることにより、年間41800万枚から6600万枚まで減少させることに成功したそうです。
日本のスーパーでもこの動きは広がっていますね。確かにこれだけみると、この運動はとても成功しているように見えます。プラスチックそのものがとても悪いように見えて、紙や布でできたエコバッグが良いのだと言う世論がよく知られています。
でもこのレジ袋（リサイクルされたもの）一枚の環境への負担を１とすると・・・
＊無漂白の紙製の買い物袋では43倍
＊布製のエコバッグでは7100倍
になるそうです。
つまり7100回以上同じエコバッグを使わないと現存のレジ袋より「エコ」とは言えなくなります。週に二回の買い物だとして年に100回強、相当長生きしなければいけません。と言うのも、コットンそのものは決して環境への負担が少ない素材ではないし、オーガニックコットンに至っては、膨大な敷地と清潔な水を必要とする為で、同じ計算でいくとオーガニックコットンの袋は1万回使わないといけなくなります。
日本の多くの自治体ではゴミ袋としてもレジ袋を受け入れているので、プラスチックのレジ袋は上手く行けば何度も利用できて、意外や意外な「エコ」な素材なのです。
私も実はマイバック持参派でまさに布製のバッグユーザーでした。うーん・・・そう考えていくと混乱するなあ。もう何をどうしたらいいのか、と思っていた矢先！
先週行ったフランスでこのエコバッグを見つけました。控えめに裏面にしか印刷されていないけれど、何と三ヶ月で堆肥の中で生物分解され土に還るそう。
そしてなおかつフェアトレード。
ヨーロッパの環境保全推進の技術はどんどん進化しています。過剰包装の日本も変われるでしょうか？
最後に：プラスチックの海洋汚染は非常に深刻だと言うのは揺るぎない真実。プラスチックのレジ袋を使うことはしても、海や自然に投棄することは絶対に避けなければいけませんね。
According to the Higgs, a research institute in Switzerland,
Some of the major supermarkets there have succeeded in reducing plastic bags by charging them for a few rappen, from 418 million to 66 million. There’s also a similar trend here in Japan. Yes, it sounds like a success story. Our society believes something plastic is bad and something in papers or in cotton are good, right?
But let’s see those plastic bags made of 100% recycled material. To achieve the same environmental impact, you’d have to use an unbleached paper bag 43 times. Und with a cotton “eco” bag, you’d have to use it 7100 times. If I go shopping twice a week, 52 weeks a year, I have to live more than 71 years from now. Oh, how could I?
Actually, the cotton itself is not really “eco” logical material and when it comes to “bio-cotton”, it demands huge land and tons of clean water and in fact, we’d have to use it 10 thousand times. So till today at least, it is not ecological at all.
Besides, most of the municipalities in Japan accept this plastic bag for garbage disposal use, and we can use it surely multiple times, it’s actually a very environmental friendly item!
Yes, I have been indeed an eco-bag in cotton user, too. After I read this article, I was so confused…. What should I believe?
Then last week, I found one more advanced solution in France.
The texts are so modestly printed on the backside of the bottom, but it says “100% biodegradable in 3 months in a compostable environment”. (And this is a fair-trade product!)
Wow, this shows us the frontline of European environmental protection. We, the Japanese, are infamous for excessive packaging, can we change ourselves, too?
At last: It’s absolutely true that marine pollution by plastic is serious. Whichever you use plastic bags or not, we definitely must prevent them from throwing them into the ocean!
